Unpopular Themes

Seems like the sports Lego has been somewhat of a failure for Lego. I noticed quite a bit of that stuff had been marked off over at the local toy shops including Lego's Shop @ Home network. I like the idea of sports and Lego and even have purchased some of the sets. I think the problem is the space and usefulness of these themes. It has a limited scope and really doesn't seem to be as interesting as doing the real thing.

Next they really should get rid of Jack the Builder. I was really fond of the old freestyle Lego. I don't understand why Lego decided to go to a larger figure rather than relying on a highly compatible minifigure. Also, it just seems like a losing line since they're competing against Playmobile, etc. Duplo I can accept because 1) it's been around for a long time; and 2) it's really meant for babies. But by 4 years of age, kids shouldn't be denied the richness of the normal themes.

Johnny Thunder isn't a very good idea either, imo. They want to do the whole Indiana Jones theme without licensing the product. But I just don't see much marketing nor usefulness as a product. Again very limited scope, although the Chinese theme was quite nice.

If they're going to continue in these licensing themes, why not try Lord of the Rings? That ought to be a wildly successful idea. I mean it's not as if other people haven't already built large scale replicas of the movie. In addition, it's a hugely popular movie with many good years in it. Lego should've been aiming towards that rather than Spider Man, which seems like an expensive excuse for what could be very good town Lego.

I just discovered this website today. Man, have I been waiting for something like this! I really don't like using ebay auctions because I feel it's a waste of time. However, I'm a pretty hardcore collector so price isn't really a big deal. Probably when I return to the states, this will become a major website I'll be using often. They have some great, rare sets that I'm juicing over. Ebay's search system is just too generic and under performs against Lego searches. But this one is wonderful since it really targets us Lego fanatics. Too bad the prices on some stuff are outrageous though.

Personally, I hope that the Lego company itself would take a look at the prices on some of these systems to reconsider which lines to put out for their next Legends remakes. Some I would love to see are the Public Works Center, the Cargo Center (1984), the original King's Castle, the Imperial Outpost, and some of the more obscure sets that were Europe only like their Bus Stop, the Bank, and Post Office.

Bringing Back "Normal" Lego Town

The current Lego town theme is more action based. People have compared it to Playmobile. However, the real play value of Lego is in the ability to mix and match in creating new themes. The current Lego town simply reiterates the usual police, fire, gas, race every three years. But there hasn't been any innovation on the actual town itself for a long time. If they did bring it back, here's my wish list:

1) Lego Shopping Center. Modular, similar to how the old Grey castle lego would be combined using a connector to increase the size of a castle. You could have all types of stores like groceries, ATM, electronics store, food court, arcade, clothes shop, pet store and a grand department store. I'm sure this would be a hit among Lego enthusiasts.
2) Library. All towns should have a library. Mid-sized set.
3) College/school. Complements the library
4) Super market. Crosses over on the Lego Mall concept, but it's also an independent set. People just can't live off of the convenient stores!
5) Cement factory. Bring back the old Public Works Center. Classic, underrated and extremely rare set.
6) Sea Museum. Basically a Lego Sea World. They already have dolphins, sharks, craps, so this is a logical choice.
7) Concert Hall. They need Lego instruments. Drums guitars, and keyboard props. I'm surprised Lego doesn't partly sponsor some band like Aerosmith :) (think of the Lego babes :)
8) Bar. Okay, not really for kids, but it does make things complete, right?
9) Grand Hospital. There's been what, 2 or 3 hospitals in existence (if you exclude the Dacta version)? They produce so many fire and police stations that you can create your own Mega Station. But Hospitals? They need more square space for all the patients!
10) Farm. They've implied this set in the past with the Universal Building sets, but they never had an official, non-duplo version.
11) Zoo. Like the Sea World concept, except they can import some of the animals from Duplo, etc. Probably someone should enumerate how many animals Lego has in existence and see if they can produce their own version!
12) Video store. I'm thinking Clerks :) seriously, maybe co-sponsorship with Blockbuster? That would be sweet! I'd buy four!
13) Movie theatre. They had one setup in the old Lego Ideas book. They should bring back a revamped version using some of the ideas there.
14) Bus/Taxi stop. The Bus stop was a great concept. Too bad they only made one set and now it's impossible to find :(
15) Park. It'll be nice seeing some set that's in a more natural area, with trees, gardens, and swings for kids.

Two New Lineups and General Thoughts

Lego recently released a third generation of the Alpha Team lego. The design looks more like GI Joe or something along those lines as Lego attempts to cross into the territory of creating their own action-adventure type of themes. It looks like interesting, but lately Lego is falling farther from the block-like structure. There's more moveable parts and some transforming qualities.

The other lineup is the return to the Knight's Kingdom. This time though there's a split in how they designed this. On the one hand, they have the usual mini figures. On the other, they now have slightly bigger figures without playsets. Those look campy and non-compatible so I'll probably avoid them. But the basic minifigure scaled sets are a bit odd. Again the emphasis is on moveable parts, but things like the Citadel of Orlan looks like some 3 year old had designed it. It's quite a horrible design that doesn't look like a citidel. It's kinda like something from Harry Potter except that the walls and columns just jut out without rhythm. There's also a drawbridge set and a large castle. The large castle looks redeeming, but the drawbridge is more of a hack. Lego seems to have a tendency with castles where the pattern goes, large castle + drawbridge + midsized castle. Since I've always been a fan of castle lego, I'll probably get these, but it hurts seeing the quality dip.

Right now, all the design efforts are going mainly into the Harry Potter and Star Wars sets, which, imo, must be their bread baskets. The new Harry Potter stuff obvious goes hand-in-hand to promote the upcoming Harry Potter 3 movie. I don't mind and the sets are quite attractive. However, it seems that they have moved away from the interjoining of sets to form some grand scale masterpiece into a town-like setting. It probably is related to how the movie is shot, but I'm a bit sad since the sets themselves in creating this oversized fortress was a tip off in the old Castle style.

The Star Wars stuff for this year is a redux of some of the more popular sets done in the first two rounds of the classic versions. They had the new Millenium Falcon, Yoda + Luke's X-Wing, the new Snowspeeder, and the Tatooine set with the redesigned Landspeeder. Now, I'm a big as fan as any of the Star Wars Lego series as seen by my collection of 3 X-wings, 4 Snowspeeders, 2 Millenium Falcons and 2 Landspeeders, but a redux? Couldn't they spent the same effort creating some new sets like emphasizing the actual settings?

Some things looked kinda neat though. The Cloud City play set, despite being "open aired", is quite a sight. The landing platform alone is worth getting for this set. They should be creating more of these playsets since the vehicle portion has been overdone. You could create more Death Star scenes like the trash compactor area or maybe more of the landing bay. Also, Ben's hut. The thing about having these types of sets is the versatility to them. I could use them not just for the Star Wars value but the value of creating my own space town (which is why I'm high on the landing platform; think of a Lego aircraft carrier).

The ultimate series has been good. The snowspeeder is something I want BADLY along with the Star Destroyer (where the hell am I going to put that thing?)

Switching from that point, let's look at the World City theme. It's basically Lego-doing-playmobile with their own twist. The only difference is that Lego has limited themselves mostly to Fire, Police, Gas and the Coast Guard. Lego wants the action elements of that, but they seemed to accomplish the same thing with their Spiderman series (which has more original elements, imo, with the playability). I think they should keep the World City theme simple and just expand the damn city. I don't know how many police and fire stations I own, but it's getting quite boring. Or at least if they intend to redo those sets, just re-release the Legend sets. Main Street was a great idea, but I hope to see more like Metro Park, the Cargo Center, the Public Works Center, the Metroliner and maybe some smaller sets like the old bus stop (which I wish they'd redo), the Paramedic Units, and maybe a house or two. You know, something useful for your town. At this point, my crime rate is at a -10.0% and fires get put out before they get started in my town.

Something I've not been able to keep up with but has been quite good are the train sets. Who doesn't like a good train set? The Train Engine Shed was one of the first original and useful Lego sets in a long time. I haven't bought it yet because of how I'm living in Japan, but it's a high priority on my list. One day when I get my own place (or expand my parent's home), I'd like to set up the whole town. One of my life's goals.

They've got a new Tie Fighter collection on sale with an additional droid fighter. It's quite cool. I "only" have one normal Tie Fighter at home while I possess something like 4 1st ed. X-wings, 3 B-Wings, 3 A-wings, 3 Y-wings, and 1 new X-Wing (and of course two 1st ed Millenium Falcons). So my Rebel Force needs some challenge. It's a good price ($70) so I might go for 2 sets (giving me 5 tie fighters total and 5 Advanced Tie Fighters). They still should get more ships.

Spiderman Lego

One thing i noticed about the Spiderman Lego series is that there's a ton of useful sets if you overlook the hero/villain theme. For instance, 4852 has one of the few Lego taxis in existence. Also, there's a cool, one-of-a-kind cable car, and bridge. The construction set a few years back which featured a highway was the last one I remember where they use an elevated type of road. This set could provide very useful if you want to add a bridge to your town.

Also, 4850 is neat which I got on discount at Target. Lego really doesn't make cars outside of Race cars and police cars, so just getting a "normal" car for your town is rare these days. It has that and a fire hydrant. Lego never has produced a fire hydrant despite having tons of fire stations.

4851 is a good supplement to what basically could be a science classroom or lab. There's no walls, but you can get some of the spare parts sets to compliment this. But the scenery is original.

However, I don't really care for the Spiderman 2 series sets. 4856 is good as an original set and could probably make a good church with a few decorative elements. The rest aren't very good imo. There's too many police elements which Lego just has an abundance of. The Fusion Lab is kinda neat since this one has an ambulance, which hasn't been seen in years (along with a black driver!) The rest is bleh.

One of my main criticisms though is the cheapness of some of these sets. There's too much of a "studio" feel (which of course is what part of the goal is here). But I want "whole" buildings, rather than a shallow facade. It's like Lego is skimping the way Hollywood does. But this is the few things you get that still relates to city and has some innovation. Lego is still too reliant on police, fire, gas, race, and harbor themes when it comes to their town lego. I think most of us veterans wish they would give us a bone and create a few "normal" town sets every year that isn't one of the above.

I'm sure many people who are diehard Lego fanatics would've already attended the Carlsbad Legoland. However, in my case it was a first time opportunity since I've been away in Japan. Still it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, not for the noisy kids, but in seeing the arts. Of course, that section really can be located in one spot which are the models of well known American cities. However, it was wonderful seeing such a thing on a large scale. Also, the toystore, of course, was killer. Beware of the rides though; they're intended for kids.

Star Destroyer

Excess is the perfect word to describe this set. Originally, I thought Lego had outdone themselves in ushering this set, but as I suspected it isn't built that well. Very unstable and far too big. The landing gear is a complete joke; you have to large feet that supposedly supports this thing, but they tend to snap off very easily when the ship tilts to the side. Also, the bulk of the ship composed of these four huge "wing-like" plates are held up weakly via magnets so you get that slanting effect along the hull. These plate structure is incredibly flimsy yet heavy all the same. I had an issue in missing a plate so i couldn't finish the rest of the structure. That caused the ship to tilt; you could see how the landing gear at that point wasn't well thought out.

The control tower sitting on top is quite heavy and delicate. It rest but does not lock into anything. So it's quite simple to rip it off, causing the rest of the ship to take a tumble if you're not careful.

Overall, it took me a few days to complete where I spent the majority of the time sifting through the parts, attempting to locate very tiny pieces. In hindsight, this set is something you build just once and utilize the parts for something else that's elaborate like a customized aircraft carrier. It has a lot of useful parts like the plates, the long 16 x 1 girders, and many forms of wing sections. If I have the time (and space) someday, I'd like to use those parts for something like an aircraft carrier to host the various X-Wings and ships I have. Until then, I'm going to wait and leave it in the box.

They just released on their website the new Construction City Lego. The big two items are the super crane and the construction site. The supercrane is an impressive 500+ piece set that probably is the best Lego city set in a long while. The construction site harkens back to the freeway construction lego they had a few years back, minus the freeway parts. in a way it's better like this because you don't have to worry about space issues and can place this set anywhere. combine this theme with the new building bonanza set, and you can create a pretty slick downtown office zone (or purchase a few of the main street sets)

Death Star 2???!?!?!

Holy shit! They actually are producing the Death Star from Return of the Jedi! There was an April Fools joke a few years ago that Lego would produce this thing as a billion part million dollar scheme, but it looks like they took this more seriously than we would believe. Considering they did the Star Destroyer at 3000+ pieces, it shouldn't surprise any avid Star Wars Lego fan that these guys will do anything for profit and fun. Looking at the new model (set for September), it looks quite unsteady. The stand (which has traditionally been these models' weakest point) looks like it'll splinter from the thinness. It'll be primarily plates according to the picture at nearly 2'x2'. Quite impressive.

However, I think this thing is something you end up gluing together because it looks too unstable. Like the Star Destroyer, I think it's better for spare parts used to create a better, sturider model. Overall, I think Lego should let this be the last of the "Ultimate Collectors" line because they simply are too large to keep around. It seems that they put all their best model makers into the Star Wars line up. I hope that these guys eventually return to more traditional areas like the city themes (the Mobile Crane is an excellent example of what Lego can do when they put the effort into something).

the newest Lego lineup. i like the idea. the castle is pretty interesting because they use the hinged joints to form a type of octagon in conjoining the entire fortress set together. the other ones range in taste for me. on the one hand, it's a kind of cool concept, but i dislike the size of these boats. inside, there's not much filling in the larger ships. still i like how this adds to the medieval type of setting so you can pit some of the older castle sets against these guys. the other thing i dislike is the dragon. lego and beast just don't go along. i'd prefer a miniature to simulate a large scale battle. but i guess i could still make this work if i ever re-create something like a large scale battle system campaign.

the interface isn't that intuitive. it's 3-d and a bit of a pain to make things interlock. also, you just don't arbitrarily get to pick which colors you want when select a part. you can't exactly have say this pink plate as a default.

maybe i'm doing something wrong. the idea is great but i think they put some sanity checks on the software so people wouldn't be ordering, say, 50000 plates (but how useful would that be?)

New Lego for 2008

Saw some new stuff trickling in. This year looks promising. I'm not too happy about yet-another-police station, but some of the other items look nifty. Particularly, there's this throwback item I caught linked at the bottom for this excellent city piece. You can see a faint 50 number which I believe signifies the designer's 50th anniversary with the company or something. The cover and set though practically are from the 50's series, with the maker parodying the prototypically stupid kids grazing the cover. Only this time, the item pictured below is quite nice. Best pieces are the LONG overdue movie theater and the wedding chapel. I might have to purchase at least three just because my town one day will be flooded with the overabundance of fire stations, gas stations, police stations and similar sets that Lego tends to redundantly re-build every few years!

Apparently, there's going to be a harbor and road construction set along with some delivery type of sets (minus the delivery center). I really like the fact that Lego has been putting a little more effort on the variety of sets, although they still repeatedly push forth the fire, police and gas station sets every 2-3 years.

The other notable set is the dwarves theme. Combining their Harry Potter leftovers, Lego is creating their own branded Lord of the Rings type of theme. Unfortunately for whatever reason, Lego missed out on the whole marketing potential when Peter Jackson's movie came out. However, one could argue, by the design of these sets, that Lego could cross promote it with the World of Warcraft theme. All Lego is missing are the elves and you could play a miniature version of Warcraft.

The next big premier is Indiana Jones. This was a natural fit considering that the 4th movie (God save us from Spielberg!!) is coming out in the next year or so. This one they had prepared for long before since they had their own branded Johnny Thunder Adventures series. Although missing out on LOTR, they definitely are doing a preemptive marketing strike by putting out the Indiana Jones series. From the looks of it, not much is different from the Adventure series so it seems at least with regards to Indy, Lego had some prescience to preconceive of the sets beforehand.

More Exo-force will be due as well. I can't say I'm coocoo over the brand, although I have my collection sitting on my shelf. I'm hoping here from what I've seen that Lego limits the production of these sets to just the robotic skeletons. Their larger playsets are just far too big for my area and blowing my budget out of proportion.

Now, the whole Lego Creator series, especially the ones focusing on homes and such have been my personal favorites and are commendable additions in the past few years. A few weeks ago I had purchased the tan colored house (don't have the number off the top of my head) and felt that I should pick up two more (as well as the other house as well). These are designed so well with the wonderful thought of having three WHOLE models with additional instructions, that they're actually worth buying a few. I've pretty much been skipping out on Star Wars and the Aqua Raiders sets and focusing more on the house stuff because those sets are what I really am looking for in Lego.

This time around is no exception. They've got a smaller, yellow house which looks like a great compliment to the other two. I like the fact that each time, they're varying the colors and models for these. The thing is that you can easily collect a few of these models without great penalty to your pocket book and still create a visually pleasant and varied scenary. It's the whole difference in architecture between say Las Vegas and NYC.

The Star Wars items look bleh to me. They have a few new interesting space ship sets, but they still aren't producing many bases. Ever since Star Wars came along, Lego has produced almost no space bases, except for the recent Mars Mission one, which tended to be overwhelming and space consumptious. I truly miss the old style of the Beta-1 Command Base, the Space Supply Station, the Intergalactic Space Station, etc. Worse yet, episodes 1-3 never truly produced any gorgeous/handsome ships, so there never has been a lot of motivation on my part to run out and grab a ton of those sets (compared to episodes 4-6 where I have some ridiculous number of X-Wings, Y-Wings, A-Wings, and B-Wings. Not to mention 3 Millenium Falcons, two Imperial Star Destroyers and a plenty of Tie Fighters). I hope that someday Lego's deal with Lucas ends because I really want to see them move away from regurgitating X-Wings and come up with some innovative space models again. Mars Mission was interesting but I felt like I was partly playing Command and Conquer 3, not building the next generation of the Exploriens Star ship, etc.

Going back to the police segment, I'm really sick of them making these sets, although it's obvious that the police and fire sets are their bread winners for the town theme. That said, one day I plan to unite most of my police sets together and formulate the most advanced police station around (okay, I know there are far more crazed collectors than me who have already done something unbelievable; but I'm just talking for myself). I've got so many of these sets that I'm chomping at the bit where I have my own home, with my own Lego room where i can just concentrate on building something killer.

Anyway, the good items this year look REALLY good. I'm enthused and really looking forward to wasting a few more dollars on these things.

By Far the Coolest Thing I've Seen Online

The Lego Vault.

Yes, I've had dreams since I was a child of seeing something like this. But apparently, Lego has a historical vault of all sets since the beginning.

How cool is that?

As far as I can remember, I would have these dreams growing up of going shopping at places like Toys'R'Us and being able to re-purchase old Lego sets. I still do. Of course, that's partially possible by going to ebay or the BrickBay and paying an arm and a leg(o) for a set that at one time had a value of $10-20. But to be in a store where you can pick up any set you want from the past is one of my life long true dreams.

I hope some day that Lego partly fulfills my dream of being able to purchase any set online in their entire catalog. Honestly, it shouldn't be that difficult, especially now that Lego has their Lego Factory software. Yeah, I could theoretically create my own sets, but there's something to be said about authenticity. Not to mention personal fulfillment of some day claiming to own all the major town, space, castle and pirate sets.
