Diablo 4: Rolling A Blizzard Sorcerer
At the moment, #Diablo4 is running another Tree of Whisper event to make up for the initial launch. I know in some cases you can get multiple caches (don’t know how that works) but I figured that it’s worth taking advantage of this feature for alts. I wanted to play my Necromancer with a friend (if he ever bothers to jump on again) and ended up creating a Blizzard Sorceress with the intention of changing her to Firewall as there’s enough updates on that end that have piqued my curiosity.
The big pieces to me in the change to Firewall are the Vision of the Firestorm helmet, Drognan’s Anguish and the Phoenix Runeword item (Focus) along with the Lo Runeword (which I do use). Because of the Tal Rasha charm set’s activation of various skills, it changes Firewall into a more passively cast spell (because it is on a cooldown) but all your Mastery skills get cast which seems pretty cool. Also, what’s nice is that for once you don’t have to run an Ultimae skill so that makes this build very different than other ones I’ve played in the past.
However, I still need a few additional pieces and am currently running T4. I’ve completed the Pit for T5 but quit last before swapping. In the meantime, I’m going to talk about the current build I’ve been playing which is Blizzard. Actually, it’s very similar to the Season 13 Static Field Blizzard build except probably not as powerful compared to when this build first launched. But for leveling it’s quite powerful. Besides the Stealth Runeword piece, I also craft Insight since you get a ton of mana regeneration, which makes spamming Blizzard trivial. And since you get a few of your runes back from the Blacksmith, you can just periodically craft these once your damage seems too low. Eventually, higher difficulties become trivial during the pre-70 leveling process.
At the moment, I’ve got my 5 set Tal Rasha working, along with an Orsivane, Galvanic Azurite and Raiment of the Sea pieces. I found the Tal Rasha unique ring too but it’s not Ancestral in quality so I can’t convert it just yet into a charm. Also, I lack numerous aspects but my damage is quite good because of the other things I’m running. The only thing I won’t run at the moment is the Splinter of Pain because my boots are really out of date and things slow down to molasses without the proper Greater Affixes. The guide I’m using suggests having +3 to Maximum Evade charges so that you can use your Teleport as a fire based invocation skill for Tal Rasha’s but the movement itself is just horrifically painful. I honestly prefer just putting movement elsewhere or tapping a Greater Affix on the movement if I’m going to counteract the Splinter of Pain. Either that or I have to continue to ditch it because it’s just too slow early on.
Right now at least, these build is nice because it’s great for farming. I don’t know how it’ll do against bosses but not dealing with Critical Strike Chance is a great boon. Also, I don’t have to worry about an Enigma and can actually use the Lo rune on either build. For the most part, it still plays similarly to the S13 build, which is mostly smooth. The seasonal powers along with the the Runeword items would play a part but I still think I want to try the Firewall build once I get the basic Blizzard build operational. I want to see if I can farm the Capstone dungeons as many people are claiming being able to find sparks (which I did). If not, I might try a different build like a Rogue or even another Whirlwind Barbarian.
What is good that I’m noticing is that there’s enough difference in builds with the Runewords and seasonal content that it is worth trying a few new things out. Again, I cannot emphasize enough that this should signal to Blizzard that they need to emphasize seasons like this especially when the player base is clamoring to keep the critical parts of the content because of how it increases the variety. Like when you have a lean season such as 12, then older content helps supplement the amount of activities. For instance, while Sanctification did end up finding its way into the game through Transfiguration, S12 simply did not have enough on its own to keep people interested. Imagine if both Chaos Armor and Sanctification had been kept for Season 12. Then I think more people would’ve stayed around until Lord of Hatred launched. Similarly, when Season 3’s midgame patch hit, if Vampire Powers and those zones had returned, I think players would not have felt as disappointed in the direction of the game as people would believe that Blizzard is willing to continue tacking on more content with more ways to build and grow their characters.
One thing I saw the other day was that Diablo 5’s philosophy for feeling powerful will be different than Diablo 4’s method and it made me wonder if the team realized that the combination of the open world’s various problems with level scaling (which I think was a terrible idea adopted from WoW) just added to much difficulty in trying to balance everything. Because the current Diablo 4 team’s philosophy seems to be conflicted in giving the players too much power, which makes no sense to me. I realize there are leaderboards and that bugs exist that cause stupid issues like infinite damage, but those situations are one offs to me.
However, the real problem I’ve seen that I think real RPG fans know is that Diablo 4 most of the time does not let you overpower your foes. That seems to be the crux of the complaints in the current direction of the game. You have silly one shots, phased mechanics with immunity phases and ridiculous health pools for no good reason outside of this bizarre war between players who think they want a challenge and players who just find the challenge to be farming content to get items for their build. I think that type of conflict in game philosophy can’t coexist just by its very paradoxic nature. As a result, Blizzard has not been able to easily bring in older content especially with the powers because each time, those situations require a balance pass. It’s the same reason I think the original Unique’s set affix design ended up getting scrapped with Lord of Hatred.
But what this does is reveal to me that there’s a lot of mixed and competing design decisions which are inhibiting the game and probably why they needed to rebuild the game from the ground up along with having someone else in charge. Honestly, at this stage, Diablo 4 seems more like a beta test for what ought to be Diablo 5, which means that the Diablo 4 engine got pretty messed up along the way.
