Overwatch: Why I Won’t Buy This Game

I don’t want to come off as a hater of this game. Quite the contrary, I want to like this game but in general, I just am not an FPS type of person. Certainly, I am not a moba type of player either, both of which seem to be combined in this game. But because that’s the focus of this game, I pretty much ended up avoiding this game entirely.

I did try Overwatch over at Blizzcon in 2014. I was pretty much destroyed and felt discouraged from ever trying again. The game seems to have a pretty high learning curve despite the fact that it’s really about knowing comps and your class abilities, despite your abilities being severely limited. In addition, the game seemed to be meant to be played with your friends with the long term aim of making the experience very competitive.

None of these features ever enticed me. I’m not really into PVP especially when the game is about being spastic. There’s no character growth, not much of a story and has far too much dependency on your group. In short, it’s the type of game that would make me pull my hair out. Worse yet, it’s not the type of game that can really hold my attention for very long.

About the only things that I really liked about the game were the video shorts and Widowmaker. I honestly felt that the game was better served as a cartoon series rather than a game. I know the original intent was to turn this into some sort of MMORPG but that iteration apparently had failed a while back. So what remained was just a basic shooter engine with no real PVE elements.

The basic game felt polished when I got a chance to play it. Meaning that it ran smooth, looked good, had great sound and seemed attractive. But for the price tag, I could easily get 3-4 decent meals for the few hours of play I would ever see myself doing in this type of environment. I enjoy playing all types of characters and roles but I can’t see myself doing well at most of them in this type of environment. There is no way to learn what you need without the support of a group of friends who just want to blow each other up on a Friday night. But that’s not how these games evolve which makes them an automatic turn off for me.

If the game had at least a campaign mode which allowed you to learn every character, get a feeling for the various roles and taught you how to play on a fundamental level, I might’ve been more inclined to purchase it. But it still looks like a beta with tons of characters and maps being the primary content output. I don’t mind a game having a PVP element but if it’s the sole focus then I know I’m going to be outstripped quickly, especially since I got into the beta at such a late stage.

I wish the game wasn’t sold as is. They already have microtransactions to continue supporting the series beyond the initial purchase so I don’t get why they needed a retail box at its current price. The amount of content you receive sounds like a major rip off for the cost and there’s just better diversions out there.
