Wizardry 6: Onto the River Styx

I made my way through the Amazulu Pyramid, gaining the second part of Ruby Eyeballs to unlock the River Styx. Most of the Amazulu Pyramid felt reasonable with regards to encounters. The boss fights weren’t too bad either since I used Fire Shield and other spells to either silence my foes or prevent major damage. The biggest challenge was keeping track of my location as the area was similar in disposition to the Mines where you faced numerous stairs and sometimes the hidden doorway/area. But now that’s through, I can press on.

I did a little test before calling out the Charron where I sat in a corner and spun around to test the encounters out. The only one that gave me any difficulty thus far was the Sirens due to their songs. In one instance, I was unable to get off a 100% Silence spell off and a few Sirens made several characters insane. Luckily, Sleep and even some lower level Sane Mind spells clear up that condition.

Right now, my team is positioned on the island for the Tomb of the Dead. I unlocked the major gates and battled the encounters in the cells. The nastiest creatures are Nightgaunts. They seem to be in each of the cells except the mini boss. But Nightgaunts have access to a wide variety of spells and need to be Silenced asap. I haven’t tried to determine their key weakness to bring down an entire group as I was being conservative with spells at the moment. Now that I’ve obtained the Key of Minos, I can access the little portcullis where two beneficial fountains lie that should make magic recovery easier.

From there I’m going to see how good the experience is in that zone. If the experience is above what’s provided in the Mines, I’ll probably sit and grind out a level or two. If the experience turns out mediocre, I’m going to continue moving forward. I know that one of the upcoming areas has some of the best gear in the game. The downside is that some of that gear isn’t usable just yet. But I think that the Halls of the Dead has a powerful fountain so I might move there for grinding out XP.

Beyond that, I did manage to level up my Lord and Valkyrie. I think the Valkyrie is now level 11. I’ll probably stick with my Bard a little longer as some of the previous traps were quite rough and my Ninja is nowhere near in a spot to handle trap duty. I think in a level or two, my Bishop can eventually take over the Mage duties from my main Mage so that I can start transitioning him to a Bishop. I’ll probably use the Tomb of the Dead island with the double fountains to level him up.

Either way, things aren’t so bad now. If all goes well, the new equipment should adequately prepare me for the Enchanted Forest. And if not that then I’ll just use the Hall of the Dead and be careful not to trigger the event that prevents you from turning back.
