Diablo 3: Balls Out Theorycrafting An Uber Season


Given that we won’t see new seasons, one thing I do hope for in the future (beyond my usual complaints of getting more Emanating follower items, making more of the legendary gems useful and adding new powers to bland and worthless legnadaries) is a balls out Diablo 3 Season that takes the best seasons and jams them together in a power gamer’s wet dream. Just having a taste of Visions + the Altar + Soul Shards made me think of how a big time season could look with the coolest powers that were spawned in previous seasons. Let’s take a look.

  • Ring of Royal Grandeur power – At this point, the RoRG almost is a must have for the bulk of the non-LoD or LoN builds out there. Just enabling a RoRG would mean not being forced to farm Act 1 Bounties, which can be infuriating and free up a jewelry slot for something else.
  • LoN/LoD power – To be fair to non-set builds, I think enabling the LoD seasonal power at the same time would be amazing. That simply frees up the gem slot and/or two rings for something else.
  • Ethereals – These are super fun. When they originally came out, you could find them sub level 70. Besides giving really high power damage, you get a 5th passive (or 6th if you’re using a Hellfire Amulet) which can really help non-meta builds improve a bit on the GR ladder. Also, the stats on these are better than a normal primal ancient so that potentially frees up your weapon slot and allows you to use your Primal Ashes on another key piece of gear that has a high variable type of roll (like a Depth Diggers)
  • 4th Kanai’s Cube slot – While having a RoRG as a default power would be nice, the 4th Kanai’s Cube slot can make borderline builds feel exceptional. Also, who wouldn’t benefit from a 4th slot? This is an incredible addition that honestly belongs as a permanent feature in the game.
  • Soul Shards – These are some of my favorite things in the game. The poison one just is visually satisfying and you have enough of a mix to really  make builds accelerate.
  • Shadow Clones – I believe these might be activated through shrines. But they’re neat little minions that have their own little builds. A nice addition.
  • Sanctified Items – Another really major difference maker that falls in line with the Ethereals and Soul Shards build enabler. While there are limited power for these items, they almost act like a nice counterbalance for builds that lack something special. For instance, the Magic Missile part was really cool for Wizards or the multiple hitting Frozen Orb. And while a GoD DH would benefit tremendously from that 2H X-Bow, they wouldn’t see too much gain from the Sanctified powers here.

So what are some interesting builds that can come out with the combined efforts of powers here? (Note: This is just the powers from seasons but does not incorporate the build. Assume the builds are standard)

GoD Demon Hunter

  • Base Gear: Gears of Dreadlands 5 piece (boots, gloves, cloak, helmet, shoulders), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt, bracers), Depth Diggers (pants), Squirt’s Necklace (amulet), Focus/Restraint (rings), Dawn (or Ballista Fortress) Ethereal power, The Ninth Cirri Satchel (quiver)
  • Kanai’s Cube: Dawn (weapon), Hunter’s Wrath (armor), Convention of Elements (jewelry)
  • Legendary Gems: Taeguk, Simplicity’s Strength, Bane of the Trapped
  • Skills: Hungering Arrow: Devouring Arrow, Strafe: Drifting Shadow, Smoke Screen: Displacement, Preparation: Punishment, Fan of Knives: Bladed Armor, Vengeance: Dark Heart
  • Passives: Blood Vengeance, Numbing Traps, Ambush, Cull the Weak, Awareness
  • 4th Kanai’s Cube slot would probably use either a Valla’s Bequest or Mantle of Channeling. I prefer Mantle of Channeling for the balance of increased tankiness and damage.
  • Sanctified Power would just be the Vengeance one. It’s not great but the other two aren’t useful for this version of Strafe/Hungering Arrow.
  • Soul Shards are Sliver of Terror with the Lightning and Fire effects for the helmet and Essence of Anguish with the Explosion on Kill. The latter aspect helps with area clear immensely.
  • Ethereal is Buriza-Do Kyanon using a Fortress Ballista, Dawn or The Ninth Cirri Satchel power. For the passive, probably cheat death or Archery.

Marauder Demon Hunter

  • Base Gear: Marauder 5 piece (gloves, legs, shoulders, helmet, boots), Guardian’s Jeopardy (bracers, helmet), Zoey’s Secret (belt), The Endless Walk (amulet/ring), Convention of Elements, Bombardier’s Rucksack, Manticore
  • Kanai’s Cube: Dawn (weapon), Cindercoat (for speed runs) or Wraps of Clarity (for defense), Elusive Ring
  • Legendary Gems: Bane of the Trapped, Enforcer, Bane of the Stricken
  • Skills: Evasive Fire: Hardened, Cluster Arrow: Loaded for Bear, Sentries: Polar Station, Vault: Trail of Cinders (with Cindercoat), Companion, Vengeance: Dark Heart
  • Passives: Blood Vengeance, Cull of the Weak, Custom Engineering, Ballistics, Ambush
  • 4th Kanai’s Cube slot would be The Cloak of the Garwulf. That provides us with 2 more Wolves and helps increase our defenses in conjunction with Zoey’s Secret. Alternatively, you could use a Cindercoat with Vault: Trail of Cinders for higher mobility/speed runs. Or you could use a Dawn since most people might do Yang’s Recurve for the resource cost reduction along with Manticore. My jewelry setup would be the Endless Walk and Convention of Elements and an Elusive Ring for more defense
  • Sanctified Power would still be Vengeance for me. I don’t like the way Cluster Arrow works with the Sanctified Power since you limit your AoE. You could put Multishot up on the bar but you’d be sacrificing something else.
  • Soul Shards would be Sliver of Terror with the Lightning/Fire effects for the helmet and Dregs of Lies since your Sentries are considered pets and you want to keep your cooldowns low.
  • Ethereal would be Windforce because it has 40-50% resource cost reduction and power would be either Dawn or Manticore. Passive would be Awareness. Also, having the Windforce Ethereal would allow you to use a Dawn in the Cube rather than a Yang’s Recurve with the Manticore in the Cube.

Natalya’s Vengeance Demon Hunter

  • Base gear: 5 piece Natalya’s Vengeance (hands, legs, boots, weapon, ring), Aughild’s Authority (helmet, chest), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt, bracers), Mantle of Channeling (shoulders), The Demon’s Demise (weapon), Convention of Elements (ring), Squirt’s Necklace (neck)
  • Kanai’s Cube: Chanon Bolter (Weapon), Trag’Oul Coils (armor), Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac
  • Abilities: Strafe: Drifting Shadow, Spike Trap: Echoing Blast, Caltrops: Bait the Trapped, Vengeance: Dark Heart, Vault: Tumble, Discipline: Invigoration
  • Passives: Blood Vengeance, Numbing Traps, Custom Engineering, Ambush, Cull the Weak

  • Ethereal: Doomslinger

Shadow’s Mantle Demon Hunter

  • Base gear: 5 piece Shadow’s Mantle (hands, legs, boots, chest, shoulders), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt, bracers), Visage of Gunes (helmet), Endless Walk (ring/neck), Convention of Elements, Holy Point Shot (Quiver), Karlei’s Point (weapon)
  • Kanai’s Cube: Dawn (Weapon), Stone Gauntlets (helped with Altar’s Ice Climber effect), Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac (jewelry)
  • Abilities: Strafe: Drifting Shadow (for speed), Impale: Overpenetration, Vengeance: Seethe, Shadow Power (you receive all runes), Fan of Knives: Bladed Armor (defense), Companion: Wolf
  • Passives: Cull the Weak, Blood Vengeance, Numbing Traps, Ambush, Awareness (on Ethereal)

  • RoRG replacement is Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac.
  • Sanctified Power would be Strafe casting non-channeled Hatred ability (Impale)
  • Soul Shards are Sliver of Hatred with lightning/fire skills being on cooldown increased damage and Essence of Anguish with the death blow power
  • Ethereal (None). You need a melee weapon.

Unhallowed Essence Demon Hunter

  • Sanctified Power would probably be the Storm Armor one due to the very high output damage it did.
  • Soul Shards would be Essence of Anguish or Remnant of Pain on the weapon while the helmet would be Fragment of Destruction just because you are horribly slow
  • Ethereal Mang Song’s Lesson because you’re doing all elemental damage or Wizardspike for the Arcane regeneration

Delsere’s Magnum Opus

  • 4th Kanai’s Cube slot would probably be Hexing Pants of Mr Yan for the resource regeneration (I normally use Bul-Kathos mighty weapons but with Ethereals, there’s really better options) or Mantle of Channeling (which you would use Lamentation as well in the Cube’s armor slot). Mortik’s Brace is another option to gain all of Wrath of the Berserker’s Runes
  • Sanctified Power would be the Whirlwind one naturally and a huge boost.
  • Soul Shards would be Essence of Anguish and Sliver of Terror.
  • Gimmershred is the Ethereal of choice for me here. Ambo’s Pride most likely would be the power. That would leave Messerschmidt’s Reaver in the cube’s weapon slot for the cooldown (complimenting an Obsidian ring) and possibly an In-geom for the offhand slot to help keep Wrath of the Berserker up

Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian

  • Base Gear: Immortal King’s 5 piece (chest, gloves, boots, legs, helmet), Fury of the Ancients (shoulders), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt, bracers), The Endless Walk (amulet/ring), Band of Might (ring), Remorseless (weapon), Echoing Fury (weapon)
  • Kanai’s Cube: The Gavel of Judgment (weapon), Bracers of the First Men (armor), Convention of Elements (jewelry)
  • Skills: Hammer of the Ancients: Smash, Furious Charge: Merciless Assault, Wrath of the Berserker, Call of the Ancients: Together as One, War Cry: Impunity, Sprint: Marathon
  • Passives: Pound of Flesh, Animosity, Brawler, Rampage, Ruthless
  • Legendary Gems: Bane of the Trapped, Gogok of Swiftness, Pain Enhancer
  • 4th Kanai’s Cube slot would be Mortik’s Brace
  • Sanctified Power would be Hammer of the Ancients hitting in all directions (of course)
  • Soul Shards would be Sliver of Terror with the three or more skills on cooldown + fire/lightning damage increase and Dregs of Lies with killing an Elite Reduces your cooldowns. Pretty much ensures your Wrath/Call are up 100% of the time
  • Glimmershred again is the best choice for an Ethereal here. Either of the Hammer of Ancients abilities are good choices to place here.

Horde of the Ninety Savages Barbarian

  • Base Gear: Horde of the Ninety Savages (shoulders, chest, boots, gloves, head), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt, bracers), Depth Diggers (legs), Endless Walk (amulet/ring), Band of Might (ring), Oathkeeper (weapon), Azurewrath (weapon)
  • Kanai’s Cube: Bastion’s Revered (weapon), The Undisputed Champion (armor), Convention of Elements (jewelry)
  • Skills: Frenzy, Threatening Shout: Falter, War Cry: Impunity, Battle Rage: Impunity, Wrath of the Berserker, Furious Charge: Merciless Assault
  • Passives: Ruthless, Berserker Rage, Brawler, Boon of Bul-Kathos, Rampage
  • Legendary Gems: Bane of the Trapped, Pain Enhancer, Gogok of Swiftness
  • 4th Kanai’s Cube Slot: Mortik’s Brace
  • Sanctified Power would be Wrath of the Berserker
  • Soul Shards: Sliver of Terror with the three or more skills on cooldown + fire/lightning damage increase and Dregs of Lies with killing an Elite Reduces your cooldowns.
  • Ethereal: Gimmershred

Ararchyr Spider Build Witch Doctor

  • Base Gear: Spirit of Ararchyr (helmet, shoulders, boots, gloves, chest), Depth Diggers (pants), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt, bracers), The Endless Walk (ring/amulet), Ring of Emptiness (ring), The Spider Queen’s Grasp (weapon), Shukrani’s Triumph (mojo)
  • Kanai’s Cube (normal): Echoing Fury (weapon), Brood of Araneae (armor), The Short Man’s Finger (jewelry)
  • Skills: Corpse Spiders: Widowmakers, Piranhas: Piranhado, Soul Harvest: Languish, Spirit Walk: Jaunt, Gargantuan: Humongoid, Locust Swarm: Cloud of Insects
  • Passives: Pierce the Veil, Grave Justice, Confidence Ritual, Creeping Death, Fierce Loyalty
  • Legendary Gems: Bane of the Trapped, Enforcer, Simplicity’s Strength
  • 4th Kanai Cube spot would go to Wormwood. That brings HUGE QoL to this build since you don’t have to worry about applying Locust Swarm anymore. Then you can use an Echoing Fury or a Vile Hive in the normal weapon slot. Echoing Fury would be great to improve your attack speed while a Vile Hive would allow you to have another rune on Locust Swarm. One other alternative would be to use Mask of Jeram for more pet damage where you’d replace Cloud of Insects on Locust Swarm for Pestilence.
  • Sanctified Power would be the one using Gargantuans to spread Locust Swarm. If you go this route, then you ditch the Wormwood and just use a Vile Hive for the 4th slot since the Gargantuan will be handling Locust Swarm duty. With that in mind, you might want to use a Shortman’s Finger to have more Gargantuans to help spread Locust Swarm
  • Soul Shards are Dregs of Lies with the stacking debuff and Sliver of Terror for the attack speed/crit hit chance buff since you’ll probably be using at least 3 cooldown abilities.
  • Ghostflame sounds like the best Ethereal because of more attack speed. And you will want to use this with The Spider Queen’s Grasp

Helltooth Witch Doctor

  • Base Gear: Helltooth Harness 5 Piece (gloves, chest, shoulders, legs, boots), Guardian’s Jeopardy (belt/bracers), Endless Walk (Amulet/Ring), Ring of Emptiness, Ursua’s Trodden Effigy (Mojo/Offhand), Scrimshaw (weapon), Mask of Jeram (helmet)
  • Kanai’s Cube: Spite (Weapon), Lakumba’s Ornament, The Short Man’s Finger
  • Skills: Wall of Death: Wall of Zombies, Gargantuan: Restless Giant (because Spite gives Humongoid), Locust Swarm: Pestilence, Zombie Charger: Zombie Bears, Spirit Walk: Jaunt, Soul Harvest: Languish
  • Passives: Grave Injustice, Creeping Death, Midnight Feast, Fierce Loyalty, Zombie Handler (because you not only gain more life but you’ll be healed more frequently by your 5 pet dogs)
  • Legendary Gems: Enforcer, Bane of the Trapped, Bane of the Stricken
  • Kanai’s 4th Cube Slot: Jeram’s Bracers (to allow Wall of Death to be cast 3 times)
  • Sanctified Power: Gargantuan + Zombie Dogs.
  • Soul Shards are Dregs of Lies with the stacking debuff and Sliver of Terror for the attack speed/crit hit chance buff since you’ll probably be using at least 3 cooldown abilities.
  • Ethereal: Arioc’s Needle for +200% to Decay skill damage.

Jade Harvester Witch Doctor

  • Soul Shads are Shard of Hatred with the pull ability (to help cluster up enemies) and Remnants of Pain or Essence of Anguish.

  • Soul Shards are Remnant of Pain with the attack speed buff to further enhance the Vigilante Belt’s frequency for casting Fist of the Heavens and Sliver of Terror with the Fire/Lightning damage enhancement
  • Ethereal: None because you require Norvald’s Favor as a set
