Metrolink Crashes

This is pretty sad....not the fact that people died, but how the trains crashed. I think the people who "designed" that piece of junk should consult Japanese engineers on how to design a transportation system. Makes me wonder because of this incident if they'll offline the system as part of an investigation the way the monorail in Vegas was halted for a few months.

Either way, Los Angeles ought to consider a real subway system rather than that junk they have now.

It's been horribly cold down South recently. My bones have been aching, but I don't think it's just me. Had a nasty storm the other day that flooded my area. I think the city should invest more money in drainage because the water levels were dangerously high. For motorists, that's scary as you can ruin your transmission or breaks.

It was beautiful weather today, marred only by Santa Ana winds. Seemed very clear tonight but I thought I perceived several clouds rolling in. Heard there'll be more storms in the near future. That has me worried because of our leaking roof. Makes me wish that the city funds us tax payers a small yearly stipend to help maintain our homes. Kinda makes you wonder where all the city spending goes.

Cars Suck

It's funny how a little rain makes people even dumber. We're having another wonderful round of piss from God. Gee, when did LA become like Tokyo in terms of weather? This stuff actually has been lasting all day rather than the short storms or drizzles.

The thing that bugs me about cars is the wheels. These things seem horrible weak. Why are we using rubber? Have we improved tire manufacturing so that they won't burst except under extreme conditions? As I traversed through the slop known as the 110, 10 and 405 today I thought how inefficient we are for not putting more effort into improving transportation. I mean I see cars improve their chassis not their engines. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like automobile manufacturers don't go out of their way to improve those things. Think about saving on gas, oil and emissions.

But what about other mechanisms? I talked about the "flying car" concept. I was thinking about new car concepts today for my novel on the Martian setting. One thing I was considering was a four legged walker, kinda like an AT-AT. Problem is that those types seem slow. But it would be pretty stable if they got the robotics right. Or if they could figure out a way to increase the movement rate and scale it in such a way to either cover great distance in a small item, or having such a thing carry large numbers of people over that long distance.

Another thing that pisses me off are all those goddamn hauling trucks. I blame them for mucking up the roads especially during heavy rainfall. I think that heavy loads should be born on large platforms carried high above ground or far beneath it on something like a conveyor belt. Imagine the way electric systems are built out with wires going every which way and then eventually leading towards their source. You'd have something of the equivalent of a data packet bearing the cargo's id being shipping to a certain destination under high efficient speeds. Maybe some kind of nanotechnology could power it where it knows the routing information built into tiny nodes in the underground facilities. Pretty cool ideas though, right?

Idiots on the Road

Was driving along an ultra crowded Hawthorne Blvd en route to Comp USA. Before that area there's this Cadillac dealership where some people were trying to pull into on the other side of the road. The line was pretty backed up so supposedly you gotta leave an open space so people can get through. There were two cars on the other side making a left turn lane and as the second one, a BMW with a couple, was going in, the woman in the passenger side went ballistic. Started throwing birds and you read off her lips, "Fuck you!" Looked like she and the other driver blocking them were ready to get into a fight.

Honestly, between the two people, I voted for neither. It should've been common courtesy to let the driver through, but at the same time the couple in the BMW (which probably didn't help since they seemed to perpetuate the BMW asshole stereotype driver) should've been less hostile. If you look at all the clutter on the road, you'd think that people in the states are the biggest assholes around. I was a bit shocked when I found out that I wasn't the only one wishing that they could mount machine guns and rockets on my car's roof.

Either way, I feel bad when foreigners come here since they probably get a poor image of whom we are. But I can't blame them in the end since we aren't exactly the most cultivated of people, although we pretentiously attempt to project that image around the globe.

Probably having the job (and knowing I have an income source) helps motivate me too. Not too much stress from work yet; most of my stress comes from commuting. At 3 hours a day, it's just far too long of a commute. Found out some of the guys hit the 24 hour family fitness around the corner. If I could find a good, small, cheap spot near my office, I'd definitely consider popping a bed inside just until the week finished and then exchange my gym membership to the 24 hour family fitness one.

Public Transportation Increase on the Rise

Not for California though. Denver and Ohio look to be a couple of spots where this is true as a result of increasing gas prices. What I'm hoping for in California is an increase in demand for better public transportation. Right now, we're so dependent on cars and probably are the worst state hit by the gas hikes. With all the damage from heavy rainfall on our roads, I doubt that we're going to see much improvements there with the molasses quick movement from our state government to do something about the road infrastruture.

We definitely should develop some sort of subway system. There isn't any excuse for not having one. Supposedly, LA/California is heavily earthquake prone, but I've seen places that are more vunerable that still have it. A few more proposals of mine are:

1) improved traffic lights. California's bite big time.
2) bifurcated freeway system. Large vehicles like semis should be forced to take a dedicated road. They simply slow down everyone and cause a mess in the mornings. Having regular cars and these fatass vehicles simply make driving around town a big mess. Instead, I envision a secondary freeway that rises above the regular ones kinda like the carpool lane you see on the 110 North. However, have that one dedicated to semis. Or have that system be underground.
3) Buses should also have dedicated lanes. They just interfere with everyone on large roads. La Cienaga for instance is too cramped to have to deal with buses and their weaving in and out. As soon as one stops, it simply blocks everyone in that lane and causes all these dopes to cut you off. It's maddening!

This would solve some of the overcrowded issues and would hopefully clear the congestion on the streets. We'd probanly could save a few gallons of gas here and there from this just from not having to wait around in traffic all day.

Why I Won't Run For Office

I complain a lot regarding the state's political situation. So you might ask, "Why not run for office?" Well, aside from the fact that I don't want a gun pointed at my head the rest of my life, it occcurred to me that no one would vote for me. Why? Because they'd recognize that I'm too sensible for office. I mean, how else did we get the Governator?

Sheep like to be lead to the slaughter. The more I consider things, the more I realize that humans enjoy self-flagellation. Why else would people believe in non-physical entities and allow that to cloud their rationality? Not to mention go to war and bicker over such decisions. And eliminate the potential for enhancing the human race by expanding and finding cures using any technology necessary. Or allowing lawyers and jackasses who have no interest in our welfare control people.

Near 2 Billion Dollars for Downtown Revamp

Interesting article on how city officials just approved spending almost 2 billion dollars in improving the downtown area with "high-rises, shopping centers and parkland around the Disney Concert Hall." The idea is that the space has been purely business oriented while at night the area is completely empty. Net effect will add 5000 jobs and probably increase the economy down there, making it a center, not only for business, but living as well. The start date is estimated at a year from December.

http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=3384845

Comments: great idea. from the outset at least. let's compare this to two other urban spots: Tokyo and SF. the first question that comes to mind when examining this, is whom the primary people living here will be?

In tokyo, big high rise apartments make tons of sense since the real estate market is skewed and land is a premium over there. with most people commuting by train, living closer to the center is a dream for many since it helps people avoid the mad rush. also, home ownership there is insane as most people will be indebted the rest of their life once they obtain some sort of property.

SF is similar in some ways, except their transportation system isn't as good. but a chief thing about SF is that it's an artistic city. the buildings themselves exude a taste of individualism with the integration of style, art, and commercialism as you'd see a living complex often integrated with a small shop (probably the owner's).

These high rises seem like a big bet on people who'd prefer living close to their office. But this is LA so the mentality isn't the same. We have a pre-existing notion of owning our own property, but not just that, rather large property. homes. these new high rises seem to target the businesses exclusive to downtown LA as it won't be practical for say an OC commuter to live in that place for the novelty.

However, I assume that the average price for one of these spots will be insane. And most likely it'll be for rent unless the city somehow subsidizes for the upfront cost of ownership on these things. considering that they're already planning nearly 2 billion, it's just a loss waiting to happen. but the people living in these things, will they just be execs with excess money? that's my guess. it's like those new Trump condos being built in Vegas. a complete novelty except for the exclusively wealthy. home ownership in LA has become ludicrous, but you still get a better deal than what i expect will come out of these high rises.

i mean, take a look at our zoning laws here. they limit how late things stay open. what's the point of building these things outside of making a few people's lives more convenient? and what if your business fails or you get laid off? then your precious spot that you theoretically may own really doesn't seem worth it, especially if your next job is in a spot like OC, etc.

honestly, i love the idea but in practice i think it's going to fail expectations just like the Metroliner. the city just isn't equipped from a sociopsychological viewpoint of handling a truly urban experience the way spots like SF, Tokyo and NYC do. some things that need to change if this project succeeds:

1) the rent must be low or home ownership should be relatively inexpensive if these things become like condos. the average person commuting down there probably faces hell on the freeway, but after a while you get used to it. however, for the price, you have to make it worth their effort. something like this would be great for post-college kids or those without families. otherwise, the amount of space and the quality of facilities will determine the success and justification of the cost of such an endeavor.
2) cleaning up those fucked up roads. Downtowns are never fun to drive in. but adding people living in those spaces will just congest things even more since you'd end up getting more people in one spot than before, especially if, indeed, it becomes a popular spot. the confusing one way roads that zigzag need to be eliminated into something more friendly and sensible. those living in that area wouldn't have to face commuting issues but they would face other driving issues when they're not at work.
3) cleaning up the downtown zones in making it more secure. a lot of people who stayed downtown especially my japanese friends felt creepy just leaving their cocoon of the New Ohtani Hotel at night. can't say I blame them. as a downtown area, you face issues of homelessness and creeps hanging out all night. not that i can't sympathize with them, but when you're talking families living in a zone like that, you gotta make it safe. and you gotta make it feel safe. sure part of the creepiness is that at night downtown is dead. but that legend isn't going to disappear until there's some assurance. otherwise, we'll see more supersized children whose parents retain them indoors since their neighborhoods are filled with child molestors, drug dealers and violent people.
4) expanding the whole metro system. the key element to housing and projects like this is the public transportation system. the idea is that you're living in a tight urban, community zone so you save on gas by not having a car. in turn, you utilize public transportation more as things are more economical in terms of getting around. the bus system at the moment doesn't cut it. it sucks. it doesn't come around frequently enough to warrant usage. but this project allows for a great opportunity to expand and create new metroliners or even a subway. even if it starts small, i prefer something starting than having nothing at all in the future. i mean, how do you expect to get to the shopping centers and work? i feel the bus system will be too inefficient and cumbersome to absorb the load that this project seems to bring on. but if you have say two lines, one running to the mall and one running to a major downtown spot, then it becomes worth it. the city would recoup their loss of money quite quickly with people utilizing the metro system as opposed to cars. lots of trickle down effects like lower demand for gas, better effects on the environment, lower gas emission.

regardless, i'm definitely for this idea. i think one major thing it'll reduce (hopefully) is the traffic whenever you bypass that area. also, new housing development is always a plus. there's earthquake safety issues as we're on a major fault line, but compare that to SF and Tokyo. i still feel far safer in LA with our faultlines than those two places combined. besides at this stage of the game, our engineers should understand enough to create sophisticated buildings that can withstand the blast of a major earthquake, unless it's something catastrophic.

hopefully, they'll approve more projects like these in spots like West Hollywood, but i'm doubtful since only conceited, overpaid millionare stars live out in those spots.

interesting article on LAX $11 billion revamp plan

http://ktla.trb.com/news/local/la-me-lax21may21,0,5872737.story?coll=ktla-home-3

hard to say what will be kept in this plan. i hope that they revamp LAX in making it more friendly. one interesting thing to point to is the mention of Ontario and Palmdale as potential alternatives. I know, after reading the new mayor's website, that he's in favor of offloading airport traffic to other spots. It'd be great if they can reduce the dependency on LAX towards other spots in LA by expanding those airports instead. i'm definitely for an upgrade of the airport, but not an expansion at the cost of increasing traffic there. the 110 and 405 are far too jammed up by that damn airport.

overall the project will take a good 10 years to complete. imo, that might mean even worse traffic considering the possibility that the rebuilding efforts might affect the 405, etc.

not really that great. probably the worst looking bunch of people at a dance party i've ever seen. we had jabba the hutt and that dancer, Yarna D'al Gargan, to top it off. i'm still wondering who ever gave the notion that LA had beautiful people? Oh it most be all those plastic Hollywood people up in the hills.

anyway, place was pretty ghetto at a warehouse. drinks were terrible, could've gotten a MUCH better deal in Roppongi or Shibuya. you had to get shuttled in after paying an outrageous $20 entrance fee. not even a complimentary drink for that amount! at that rate i would've been better off hitching a ride to my company, parking at my office and hanging out on the Sunset Strip!

Make those bums earn their goddamn money for once. I don't give a shit. Make them work weekends, holidays or whatever.
saw something on the road the other day that disgusted me. there was this car with a handicapped license plate to my side and a tremendously obese woman driving it. there weren't any discernible causes outside of the woman's tremendous size that would indicate a handicap symptom. but if that's the case, isn't that sad?

recently, i noticed an increase in the number of handicapped license plates on the road. haven't taken the time to inspect each driver with those plates, but i'm somehow (cynically) suspecting similiarities in this with the increase of obesity in the country. but i find it to a serious issue when people resort to being labelled handicapped as a result of their weight problems.

saw an article about he's been taking the metro to lead by example in terms of encouraging more people to avoid taking their cars. his big priority is on reducing the number of cars on the road....something i definitely agree with. he recognizes the horrible problems about LA's traffic, possibly the worst in the nation which also cause problems like accidents and immense pollution.

one of the bullet points in the article referenced Hollywood's inflated ego with their criticism of the subway system running into "their" terroritory. namely that some celebrities walk of fame stars were cracked (poor babies!). but sarcasm aside, there's a real need for us to bypass these elite few who service no one except themselves and move towards a good public transportation system. it'd take a lot of money to start that type of project but it's absolutely necessary at the rate of gas price hikes and the general cost of living. i still say that businesses should offer tax breaks for subsidizing (or themselves being subsidized) for having their workers use public transportation. the money from the increase in public transportation should go back into the system and be used to enhance and grow what exist so the entire city has more routes. right now, it's ridiculous to get around with so many cars on the road. i, myself, enjoy driving but not to work in the current situation. but if we had a subway like tokyo it'd be great since a lot of stress would be relieved on us.

motivation

such a funny word. but living in california and the US just hyper extends this notion into the other direction. i just hate it here. i think most of the population is composed of ear wax since the collective brain power here makes the rest of the world dark in absorbing all remaining brilliance. West Hollywood drivers are filled with coke shots or perhaps it's the proliferation of cellphones which reportedly damages brain cells that have sapped the little remaining sponge people have in their skulls here.

All i can say is that i have less and less motivation to be a US citizen than ever. Such a shame that we lack a visa exchange program so that we could trade with someone who'd give a shit about being an uncle sam paying cronie. i'd prefer spending my cash on something socially useful but it's nearly impossible when you get raped by the government.

right now i really don't care about work nor much else. i'm not afraid of losing my job because if i did, i'd simply move back to japan. heck, i'd consider dropping my us citizenship the way things are going here. perhaps i never noticed it before, but the way of life here is so hollow. it's this ignorant bliss people have here in living this lie of sitting at home, thinking they have something in property, a TV they watch to eliminate their daily misery, and unhealthy food which temporarily boost their endorphins to motivate them for another day of drudgery. i hate this so-called lifestyle. it isn't culture. you can't call utter decadence culture. it's just a distinegration of society.

i'm considering cancelling cable because it's an utter waste of money. cable tv has nothing interesting or even remotely educational. you can call the discovery channel, etc. educational but why watch it when you can read about it on the net? what a mistake it was to allow the cable company to dupe me into getting this so-called free cable service. nothing is free. hell i might as well even get rid of my cable modem service since that's too costly.

either way, the only thing cheap in LA these days is fast food. funny how an artery burger is cheaper than a salad (which often isn't even decent). i think it's a conspiracy by the FDA to keep Americans passive. they approve fattening foods with high sugar content to keep people buying into the heavily commercialized (fast) food industry. but it's utterly sick. along this train of thought is my theory that the FDA and government want people to be obese and have diabetes. the higher the stroke rate, the higher the life insurance and health care cost. helps the rich hospitals and doctors despite that middle america is slowly killing itself off. fast food doesn't kill the rich since they don't eat crap like this (unless your name is Lea Thompson or Sally Struthers). also, why would upper class america care about health insurance premiums? the cost of that is nothing for them compared to the average american. and the government isn't going to implement universal health coverage anytime soon.

then think about those people who are obese or on the track of becoming obese. they remain passive and content because they are too fat to be active. instead, they lie like the typical consumer at home watching TV while eating a bag of Dorritos. how can they repel the government's oppression when they can't even get off their couch to change channels?

i'm telling you it's a real conspiracy.

is it me or are californians dumb enough to not realize that just by sticking some random asian in a place that supposedly makes japanese food, rolls up fish and rice and expect it to be called sushi? i've been to two awful "sushi" spots in west hollywood and the first thing i noticed is that both are run by koreans. not to bash koreans, but i don't want to pay some overpriced dish just because you have some crappy atmosphere expecting to simulate the japanese environment. after eating in tsukiji and midori sushi in shibuya on numerous occasions, it's hard to cut my standards short, especially when it comes to something that i consider to reside on a higher level of taste. i've had the best sushi and can compare when you get some 4th rate pile of junk. i should just stick with my plan and not eat sushi while i'm in california; it's quite awful out here.

now Schwartzen-azi is threatening a tax hike if prop 76 fails in the november ballot. this is a double edged sword for both himself and the voters. right now it's not a popular item as it stands with a 28% favorability in giving the governator more power in allowing him cuts without legislative approval and put caps on spending.

first of all anyone who elected him based on his "no new taxes" should've remembered what the other bush "promised" in his election. now it's obvious that his high priority is in balancing the budget, which is going to be impossible in a state like this. but i find it impossible to put spending caps on the elements he mentions like education, police and healthcare. these are fundamental things california needs. makes you really wonder where the rest of the money is going if he can't put more money into those critical items.

but the threat of him increasing taxes shows that he's just a singleminded, self-righteous bully that doesn't know how to compromise (i.e. politick) to get the job done. running one of the most powerful states ain't the same as lifting weights (or in his case, taking steroids and lifting weights), nor making a movie where you have a director to do 99% of your thinking and making sure you look good. if you want to keep the voters here happy, don't bully them (us).

DWP sez: "Several workers who were installing an automated transmission system hooked up the wrong wires."

Oh god! the humanity! you know these fuckers backed us up on La Cienaga YET again this morning! a few days ago it was closer towards the 10 freeway. now, they're digging up right before Centinela. it was destiny for this group of incompetent jackasses to take out half the LA grid! they seriously need to fire all the management and 90% of the workers.

first the planning (or lack thereof) is just horrible. they don't bother asking around if their stuff will jack up everything (because it will). instead, they just go out during some inconvenient time and cause massive havoc. why don't these goons get off hours like between 12 am - 4 am to do their work? having these morons out there during the day, blocking off more streets than necessary just makes traffic unbearable. then gas isn't helped by this either because you have numerous stalled cars in the already congested streets.

i think the whole organization needs to get revamped. the airport system wasn't that bad but they had reform. why can't DWP get reformed? of all the agencies this one (and the DMV) need it the most. please fire these bozos. the only thing these morons are competent at ought to be cleaning manure from pigeons.

kids fighting in Irvine

went to have some tea with a friend of mine at the Irvine Center plaza. as we were drinking and chilling, we heard this splash as a pair of girls (a black one and an asian one) started arguing heatedly over some petty issue. Apparently, that petty issue was that this other black guy was cheating on one of the girls. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue, something reminiscent of one of those lame daytime talk shows: "You stoopid biatch!" "Shut up ho!"

some things came to mind at that point, mostly how those kids were mostly fit to work at McJobs or selling cigarettes to each other at the gas station, or that eating too many burgers truly induces impatient, brazen and lewd behavior. finally, i realized that the world isn't that hard to conquer when the masses have the mental discipline of a cracked walnut. i mean, it's hillarious hearing one of these crackers scream, "I do what I want ho!" while thinking that a skewed relationship at their age meant anything. Oh my god! He cheated on me! How dare he?!?!?! I thought we loved each other!

Apparently, these kids belonged at home at that time of night as someone called the cops and that they were practically told to leave the premise on the basis of being underage. I love how teens like to consider themselves some mental giants and rulers of the galaxy just because they can hang out at a Chinese tea parlor.

Dry Spell = My Fortune

Many people have or will lose their homes because of the dry spell cast over So Cal. However, in my case, the dry spell is literally a blessing in disguise. It means that my mom's home in LA will be safe from rain storms which have been destroying, year-by-year, our roof. I will anticipating a heavy rainy season in LA, but I think I'll have some time bought at least to fix up the roof.

Originally, I was saving up to buy a condo. Housing though is still horribly overpriced in Los Angeles and so buying there or in Las Vegas won't make too much sense for me. I would need at least $80k for a Condo in some place like Irvine. At this rate, it'll take me another 2 years before I have that amount (unless I can get an instant pay boost).

So instead I'll focus on what I can do NOW. Which is fix up my mom's home. I think the dry spell is a sign of chance. If I can correct that problem, it'll buy me time in the long run to fix other problems. I just need to take things one step at a time.

There's some interesting comments in this post. Most are hostile towards ADA but I think there needs to be a balance. Hopefully, before California does something stupid (as it's apt to do) and imposes martial law on the world, they need to think about the real problem at hand, which is helping people with ADA.

Now, here's the thing. It makes a lot of sense for those with sight impairment to go after a major website like Target. But look at those words closely: MAJOR. Any company that has a MAJOR website with tons of traffic should have some social duty to help the impaired. Minor websites (like yours truly) require too much maintenance because only one poor soul can work on it at a time.

I hope for God's sake that the people in California for once make a sensible decision and only put the restriction on certain websites. I think if they used some measurement, it ought to be something like only the first 200-300 top traffic sites in California should be forced to operate like this. I don't think that's unreasonable and hopefully the people with visual impairment realize that sometimes they can't always have their cake and eat it too. Either that or put the burden on the users' browsers rather than the websites themselves.

I'm home right now in LA. It's great. I really have been enjoying myself. I haven't enjoyed myself like this in a LONG time. The weather, the food, the company. Even the ant flooded environment of my home with the swelling heat feels more comfortable than the cramped albeit air conditioned room that I'm holed up in Tokyo.

This whole thing is making me think just how burnt out of Tokyo I am. Sure, the work is okay, my co-workers are fine, etc. but there's something missing. I've always said that I would prefer if .jp was adjacent to Los Angeles such that I could take a bridge and just drive to Tokyo on the weekends. Instead of having that little shitty Tiajuana place, give us a nice city for people like me to hang out (hmmm....just to think about it....it would be pretty interesting if the Japanese and people in Mexico could exchange geographic locations. That would be kinda cool in reality).

Anyway, forgetting the exorbitant gas prices, the political mess and other screw ups going on in the states, I want to be back. I guess .jp just isn't fun for me anymore....
