The Wally Syndrome

A few months ago there was a good read off of HotJobs.com on when one should change jobs.  There were numerous symptoms but practically I hit about 90% out of 15-20 or so.  All of this in a sense culminates to what I call the Wally Syndrome, named after, of course, Wally from Dilbert.

The Wally Syndrome for me essentially is when a person loses all motivation for existence at work and gets excited only on three days: 1) Fridays at 5 pm; 2) holidays; and 3) pay days.  Bonuses are so rare that I really don't want to include them, either that or subclass them as a form of an extended pay day.  My coworker once had told me that he only showed up to work to pick up his paycheck.  That was such an insidious notion that it stuck with me ever since.

I think that these things might even be taken into excess where people might not even look forward to paydays and holidays.  In the case of paydays, it's because the numbers never increase.  In the case of holidays, it's because they're forced to spend more time with their families.

However, when you start to encounter the Wally Syndrome, it's best to make arrangements for a new job.  Or at least a long term vacation.  You never want to be in a rut where a robot has more emotional content for doing its routine compared with yourself.
