Well, I pretty much was catapulted into my new job, starting this past Monday. So far, it already beats out my former employer by a mile. No stupid controls over my desktop, I get two pairs of systems (including one laptop), I get to program in PHP and AJAX (!!!!), there hasn't been any politics in the office so far, and I really like the intimacy. People are fairly young and show more knowledge about their job than my former employer. It makes me respect them that much more.
Also, there are many pretty office ladies. So far they've treated me very nice and everyone wants to meet me, since I'm the only foreigner in the office, not to mention the only pure native English speaker. I feel like a rock star!
I know the money won't be as good as a finance company and that I'll have to improve my Japanese. But these days I'm really about environments rather than dollar figures. It makes a real difference if you enjoy what you're doing compared to being unhappy due to office politics.
Actually, the Japanese thing doesn't bother me that much. I've been getting practice almost once a day with people for a short coffee break in meeting each of the staff individually. That's a real positive for me since it'll motivate me to study Japanese again. Maybe this time I won't have the constant uneasy pressure of learning an industry I have little to no interest in.
But as with everything, only time will tell. I always tell my friends that you really won't know how a job turns out until you've worked at a company for a minimum of 6 months. At least, my current environment sure the hell beats my former employer by a galaxy.
