I bought a Maxtor 300 GB hard disk and an external box. When I tried to install it as-is, I encountered a problem where neither my Windows XP system nor Fedora Core 5 system would recognize it. The problem is that the factor installed settings have the jumper setting to "cable select." You want to set it to the primary setting. Then either system will pick it up.
