World of Warcraft: Is it Worth Gearing Up Alts?

I was watching Yoni stream the other day and noted how Cataclysm and Pandaria offered venders for quickly gearing. I assume when the next expansion comes out, the game will provide some quick catch up mechanisms for people who came in late and missed out on raiding. Like other expansions these catch up mechanisms more or less invalidate the work you put in by essentially lowering the value on your gear from raiding. Now, while gear from the higher raids probably will last a few levels, the situation does make me wonder as someone with numerous alts, “Is it worth gearing up all my alts?”

In short, is it worth putting in the effort to really push them through all the LFRs and whatnot to acquire gear? Or should I just focus on a few toons who are reasonably geared, do LFRs just to “see content” and do other things like Pet Battles in the meantime?

Well, obviously this will be an extremely subjective topic, which boils down to another question: what do you want to get out of this game?

You really have two roads: 1) I like experiencing as much as possible; 2) I don’t really care and there’s no point since what I do eventually will become outdated. Last night I spent quite a bit of time trying to craft a few pieces of gear for my mage. In Cataclysm, I spent a good deal of time on each of my alts and my mage towards the end had some pretty decent gear (not normal nor heroic mode stuff, but enough to make her do some decent DPS). Now, I managed to toss a lot of that into her bank as a souvenir, perhaps to transmog one day even. But the experience shows just how easy it is just through crafting how one could exceed everything from the previous expansion.

Yet there’s another side to this token. That side is being able to experience the aspects of the game while it’s still hot with different specs and seeing what you can acquire before everything gets outdated. Think about how many times you might see anyone asking for a Deathwing run these days. It might take at least one more expansion before you see people tackling most of Cataclysm raiding content again.

Still I’m thinking about the time consumption aspect. I really enjoy doing LFRs, getting gear and see my character inch up the DPS meters and tackle more difficult content. Yet it takes a ridiculous amount of time and patience. The queues are not instant and just trying to plow through everything might easily take a good night to complete on a single toon. Also, you can easily get bored and burnt out after a while and want to try something else for a while.

All these aspects make the question difficult to answer, at least for myself. I’ll probably try gearing my alts up once I finish leveling them because I enjoy it. But I think the overall arching issue is something to consider.
